I grew up watching Tom Selleck shoehorn himself into a 308 GTS, but the first time I got to drive one I was horrified by the car’s shitty ergos. The intruding wheel wells make you sit at an angle to cover the pedals. Still love the car for its looks, but the driving experience was a downer. Le sigh.

Ferraris had pretty shit ergonomics for a long time, at least according to the buff books as I certainly never had one. The driving position was infamously bad with the steering wheel positioned like one in a bus. I think it started to change around the time of the Testarossa.

Holy shit, I think I’ll end up with back issues working the pedals at that angle...especially with a clutch as heavy as I imagine a Ferrari having.

The 348 and 355 are leaps and bounds better than the 328. Yes, the pedals are still slightly offset but not by much. You can sit straight and just rotate your foot to the gas. The brake is right in line with your right foot. Plus the clutch is a much shorter throw and the steering wheel is adjustable. I would say the 348 driving position is spot on for me.

I had a similar thought when I test drove a 328. I also didn’t like the 355, but for other reasons. To me, even worse than the angle was how close I had to sit to wheel just so I would have full travel of the clutch. It was not enjoyable haha

The problem was mostly confined to the mid-engined cars. For example, here’s the inside of a 365 GTB4 Daytona.

Many mid -engine cars still have this problem—the driving position on the F355 was still skewed to the centre of the car, and even my current 4C doesn’t have a perfectly straight leg direction. But, unlike the F355, the 4C’s steering wheel position is on point.

Steering wheel placement still agricultural.

Yeah, and that doesn’t even rank high on the ergonomic faux-pas scale. Pedal placement is much more critical for basic driving comfort and safety--I’m sure there are worse things in the QP.

The 355 wheel tilts, right? I
didn’t look super hard when I drove one

Yep it does
, but it’s too far from taller drivers. It needs to telescope several miles to be a good reach.

Seems about right. The 348 seems about perfect for me but I’m of very average height and kinda lanky haha

I finally remembered to take a few pictures. Sorry about my bare ass feet. I normally wear flip flops then drive barefoot:
Here are my legs straight forward:
My right foot rests on the outside of the brake pedal. My left foot lines up with the dead pedal
So I just rotate my right foot to operate the gas Which works perfectly with the angled pedals.

Lanky is what you need to be to drive these cars. Long arms, short legs.

I’m pretty well suited then hahaha
At least they are better than the 328. The wheel, pedals, and shifter are all right where they need to be for me.
